STATEMENT COMES AS AREAS OF ALEPPO CITY ARE CUT OFF FROM HUMANITARIAN ACCESS AND AS THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN DARAYA DETERIORATES

Washington, DC. (July 15, 2016) – An estimated 400,000 people residing in eastern Aleppo City have been cut off from humanitarian access, while an estimated 8,000 residents in Daraya continue to wait for assistance after the last convoy over a month ago, the first convoy permitted to enter in four years.

This past Sunday, we sent out the call and it was answered. On a beautiful afternoon that heralded the coming of spring, Syrian Community Network gathered women from various backgrounds to reaffirm the bonds of sisterhood. And just as spring brings signs of renewal, and new beginnings, our hope was that this event would lay the foundations for such a change in the lives of our refugee women. From its inception, the event had girl power written all over it.
As a recent graduate of American University, I thought I had experienced the gamut of typical D.C. internships—meaning menial tasks and limited project ownership. Everything changed last fall when I became an Advocacy and Outreach Intern at Syria Relief and Development (SRD). In addition to finally working for a cause that I truly cared about, SRD gave me the responsibility and challenging tasks of a real full-time employee. I hit the ground running on my first day and never stopped: I arranged consultations with Congressional leaders and met with staffers on the Hill; I researched U.S.

Karam Foundation was founded in 2007 with a mission to help others. Karam in Arabic means generosity. In 2011, the organization’s focus shifted to Syria. Since the start of the uprisings, our mission has developed to serve refugees that are displaced as a result of the ongoing violence in Syria.
